I’m such a kid

I did a little happy dance and grinned from ear to ear when I heard that Cartoon Network is coming to Canada. It’s like my childhood coming to revisit me (but a more modern and Americanized version of it). 

I’m 21 years old, and I’m excited about a children’s television network. 

I’m such a kid.

The black women in the states do not joke when it comes to their hair

Everyone is wonderfully made up. Their hair is so slick and styled and colourful….I can see why the black hair industry is so worth so much over here. 

Oh wait, I forgot to mention that their hair is also so fake, almost everyone is wearing a weave. 

On first look I’m hit with a mixture of fascination and jealousy— I want to look as glossy as them too! I want to don a 20” weave with tons of curls and a shiny red finish. And then I remembered that if you don’t sink a ridiculous amount of money into that stuff, you end up with something that expires quickly, demands too much maintainence and demands too much attention. Lol yeah I’m too much of a student to try and afford an expensive hair lifestyle. 

I had a wonderful chat with a very sweet sales lady about it. She told me that there is a negative viewpoint whereby anything natural and normal is not viewed as beautiful. So to show up to polite society with a fresh naked face, with natural hair proudly reaching for the sun— is not even regarded in the notions of beauty. 

That saddens me. 

She’s right when she says it’s about time people start to change their thinking.

If at first you don’t succeed, cry and try some more

After a solid week of battling with photoshop and my own design incompetencies, I finally showed one of my bosses the work I had done. 

It was met with silence. 

Oh shit, this is exactly what I feared. 

So after I asked for suggestions on improvement, he told me a concept that he hadn’t mentioned before, and then I realized that the one image that I HADN’T shown him (because I thought it was the worst) matched exactly what he was looking for. 

While we took what felt like an excrutiatingly long time to reach the computer lab, he acknowledged my challenges and asked if I was at least having fun (that’s what’s important right?) and his question was met with my silence. 

He laughed. 

But what surprised me most, was when I opened up the image that I had hidden (because I had literally put it together from around 7-10pm the night before this morning’s meeting) and his eyebrows raised and he told me he liked it. 

OMG HE TOLD ME HE LIKED IT. 

I cried tears of happiness on the inside and quickly handed the files to him and asked him to make magic. I almost didn’t hear him when he said that we would both be working on that image file I had just made, to finish the final product. 

That statement probably won’t sink in until Monday. 

Until then, I shall strut around feeling

I’m finally on a fucking roll. 

This better turn out well.
